On December 18, CUPE stands in solidarity with people around the world who have been forced to leave their homes in search of safety, security and a life where basic human and labour rights are respected. International Migrants Day is a day to renew our collective work to build a better world, a world where everyone [...]

CUPE came out in strong support of postal workers who’ve been forced back to work, rallying in defence of their right to strike and for free collective bargaining at the Canada Post annual public meeting. Members of CUPE’s National Executive Board joined postal workers and their allies outside the meeting at Canada Post headquarters in Ottawa. [...]

Over the past thirty years, universities and colleges have increasingly turned to precarious forms of employment. Faculty and support staff are increasingly being hired on short-term, temporary, and casual contracts, rather than in permanent, secure positions. More and more positions are being contracted out to employers who pay low wages and don’t offer [...]

On December 10, people around the world will stand up for equality, justice and human dignity by celebrating International Human Rights Day. This year, the day represents the 70th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Declaration was adopted in the United Nations General Assembly in 1948 in response to [...]

Sexual violence is any act targeting a person’s sexuality, gender expression or gender identity that is committed, attempted or threatened against a person without their consent. Sexual violence includes harassment, which [...]

On December 3, we draw attention to discrimination and barriers in our workplaces and communities, and we recommit to a disability rights agenda. People with disabilities experience higher rates of poverty, unemployment, discrimination, incarceration, harassment and violence. Those marginalized by racism, sexism, homophobia or transphobia face additional barriers and harm. Disability is created by barriers [...]

CUPE’s National Executive Board has approved a $1 million interest-free loan to support Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) in their efforts to secure a fair collective agreement. In recent weeks, postal workers have faced attacks on their rights not just from their employer, but from the federal government as well, which used a [...]

On December 1, World AIDS Day, CUPE renews its commitment to breaking down barriers for people with AIDS and HIV. Our union continues to support the global AIDS movement that struggles against discrimination and fights for improvements in public treatment programs. Poverty, violence and other forms of marginalization mean the impacts of this ongoing epidemic are not shared equally. Women, people with disabilities, [...]
